Hardware

While we recoop from Theo's departure, it should be noted that Sox players have been picking up some hardware.  Jason Varitek today won his first Gold Glove award for outstanding defense at his position; yesterday, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and Jason Varitek took home Silver Sluggers as the best hitters at their respective positions in the American League.  Earlier in the week, David Ortiz was honored as this year's AL Hank Aaron Award winner for the league's best offensive performance.  Congratulations to all named.

1 - As much as I am pissed at the Sox FO right now, I'm kind of glad for the sake of the payroll that Varitek pulled the precious metal double whammy the year after signing a deal and not before (assuming he didn't win both last year--I have no idea). But, here's hoping he keeps it up. (Comment this)

2 - I believe this is his first golden glove. Correct me if I'm wrong Andrew. Nice to see good news! (Comment this)

3 - No correction needed, Peter. That's his first. I'd like to say it's well-deserved - and it is - but the Gold Glove is such a crock of shit in general. (Comment this)

4 - Yeah, Derek Jeter got one. Nuff said. (Comment this)

5 - Not to mention that ridiculous Rafael Palmeiro win in the year he played I think 27 total games at first. It's all based on perceived reputation from players and coaches; is it really surprising that Jeter won the year he made the diving catch into the stands? Of course, Tek's reputation is very well deserved, so this time the award and the talent match up. (Comment this)

6 - On the bright side, is A-Rod's not winning a sign that Papi may win the MVP? A-Rod supporters made soooooo much of A-Rod's value as a defender and that he save soooo many games with his glove, you would have thought him the second coming of Brooks Robinson. (Comment this)

7 - I'd think maybe it was, except for two things: first, Eric Chavez has a stranglehold on the AL award. He just won it for the fifth time. Second, the Gold Glove and MVP are voted on by two different groups; Gold Gloves by players and managers, MVP by schmucks like Shaughnessy. (Comment this)

8 - Just because it is different groups, it does not reduce the absurdity of many of the selections - even worse than Jeter was Bobby Abreu winning in the NL. And on the whole, I would think the players tend to make worse decisions, BBWAA are often just as bad.

The reality is, A-rod is not really that good of a third baseman. He is actually rated just about neutral according to most of the metrics used by BP.

Who knows. I guess we all will on Nov. 14. (Comment this)

9 - Keep in mind, of course, that you're talking to someone who would have cast his vote for A-Rod regardless of defensive considerations. (Comment this)
