When it Rains...

According to EEI, Wade Miller's start has been given to Arroyo tonight, with Wells slotting in tomorrow.  It seems Mr. Miller is experiencing some shoulder stiffness.

This makes things interesting, in a bad way.  We're now down to three starters that we know will make their next starts; Arroyo, Wells, and Wake.  For all the noise that Clement is doing wonderfully and may only miss one start - if that - we don't know for certain... which likely means the Sox don't know for certain, as that's the kind of thing they'd rush to press.  If Miller's injury is serious, meaning he has to miss 4 starts or more, we're going to need a better rotation entry than Jeremeye Gonzalez, as much as I... don't dislike him.  Add to that Wells' upcoming suspension... and we may see Jon Papelbon sooner than expected.

Add to that Nixon's absence, which I'm betting will be for the rest of the season, and this team has holes the size of the one in the Geico commercial.  The deadline's 2 days away, but without sacrificing top prospects - and if the team does that, there goes the 'building for the future instead of panicking on the now' idea - how many pieces can we expect to actually receive?  We can trade Mueller/Youkilis, Kelly Shoppach, Alan Embree (until the end of the day), Kevin Millar, Adam Hyzdu/Gabe Kapler, Roberto Petagine, and any prospect not named Hanley, Dustin, Jon (x2), or Anibal.  You have to put Manny in that discussion as well, at this point, though I'd be legitimately stunned. Is that enough to swing a reasonable RF fill-in, an additional reliever, and at least one more solid starter?

I suppose it doesn't matter if it's enough; it'll have to be enough.  We need a starter, we could really use an OF, and a reliever - once the only thing we really needed - is now kind of relegated to the back burner.  This will be an interesting two days for Theo; here's hoping he can come out of it with an intact team.

1 - I haven't been able to follow the developments. Is Miller really hurt? Could a this be related to a trade in the making (involving Miller or Arroyo)?

[Of course, if Miller's sitting out, we should trade him. Doesn't he know the team needs him? What a bum.] (Comment this)

2 - Re: Miller - the story as it stands seems to be that Miller 'felt some stiffness' and they decided to hold him for a start. Sounds like it's not trade-related; if it is, claiming an injury seems an odd way to go about it. (Comment this)

3 - Yeah, I just didn't know if the injury was confirmed or if it was just a rumor. Wishful thinking, I guess. (Comment this)

4 - Report from Fenway: Went to the game and it was a beautiful summer night to be at Fenway. Ramirez was cheered by some but booed by most...unthought of at another time. You guys really need to be here to get a sense of what it is like. (for the record Earl, Miller's sitting out isn't even close to Manny sitting out...poor comparison). Arroyo did an awesome job and Curt closed. He's like a warrior coming out of the bullpen. The flashbulbs go off all over the park. But probably one of the highlights of the night...when we were leaving the park, with multitudes of people and cars there is really nothing to do but wait, so rather than wait in the car we waited by where the Sox leave for the night. Lo and behold out comes Matt Clement, behind the wheel of his Range Rover, smiling and waving. I can't believe he can drive he was beaned so hard the other night. So perhaps he won't miss any starts. Millar on his Harley was a sight as well. So Manny got his comeuppance from the fans(particularly when he struck out). Had to be uncomfortable and I actually felt sorry for him. I neither booed nor cheered, just wondered at how someone with so much talent can be such a malcontent when you play on a team that's a contender. (Comment this)

5 - My Miller comment was a joke. And an obvious one too. You *really* need to lighten up.

Booing any player -- Manny especially -- is absolutely disgraceful. What are we -- Yankees fans? For the record, Ortiz lashed out at said "fans", and Francona backed off his comments about Manny sitting out. (Comment this)

6 - I heard theo on WEEI before the game, on my way to NH last night. He said Clement wants to make his next start, "but that's not going to happen." sounded like they would be skipping one start out of precaution, but that he was fine.
Also said the manny situation would be handled "in-house" and that it's unfotunate that the media is making such a fuss about it.
oh, and he said they would be "burning the midnight oil for the next few days here."

Even though theo gives up no information, ever, I am sad that I don't get to hear his interviews most of the time. (Comment this)

7 - He's right, it is unfortunate the media is makng a fuss. Maybe if the manager and COO hadn't opened their big mouths. Terr, by the way, did in fact backpedal from his comments the other day.

Mrs. Rad - I do so love it when Sox fans get indignant about booing. We're talking about the lamest thing one can do at a ballpark that isn't the wave. But Boston fans? We treat it like bowing to royalty. We discuss wiely whether it's proper or improper to boo in a certain given situaoin, we analyze how many people werebooing and what that means and what message it sends to the players and what message it sends to people watching on the teevee and good lord. If players really need a whole bunch of people making stupid noises at them to tell them they screed up, a guy sitting out a game is the least of our worries.

What's that? The guy sitting out a game is the least of our worries anyway? Well, there you go then. (Comment this)

8 - Andrew, nice comment! Manny sitting out the game was the last straw for fans but as I mentioned before you really have to be here being bombarded with all of it to really feel it ("it" being every transgression the man's ever commited). I am not a boo-er though I am a cheer-er. But to each his own. As you allude to, who knows if it has an impact or even if it should. (Comment this)

9 - Actually, I think I have a much clearer idea of what's going on down there for being removed from it. Mass hysteria is far easier to label from without than from within.

In any case, glad you enjoyed the game. (Comment this)

10 - I like that.."Mass" hysteria, no pun intended. You might be right...cuz when you're here you get caught up in it. And I lied in my last post...I boo Gary Sheffield. But he's the only one.

Nice article you wrote in Firebrand. I'd never heard of that one until you put it on your blog. (Comment this)
