I know I'm late to this party, but everyone should go check out the very impressive work Reb is doing with a stat she came up with called BpB - Bases per Batter - which basically does what it says. Like many of the more commonly used rate stats, it looks at how many bases a pitcher allows, but it does two things differently: It looks at these things by batter, which adds some specificity, an it includes incidental aspects of pitching, like stolen bases, errors, base advancement, etc. A lot of people fiddle around with 'new stats', most of which turnout to be pretty useless, but this is a very useful and interesting measure of pitching ability, and - like the best ideas - I'm surprised no one thought of it before.
